Do you have a young person in your life who thinks they know everything and can handle anything that comes their way? Maybe it’s time to teach them some humility. You see, with certain pursuits, you can’t always win. For instance, take the young person small game hunting and maybe they’ll shoot and kill a bird or two… Maybe they won’t. Sure, they can brag all they want on the way to the hunt about how they’re going to bag a bunch of birds (even though they’ve NEVER hunted before) but reality has a way of teaching humility quickly. With hunting, sometimes you shoot and score and other times you shoot and miss.

Humility

Humility is just one “lesson” you can learn from small game hunting. Another is judgment. With hunting, you have to make a lot of decisions and you learn, with time and practice, how to judge several things, including terrain, guns and when to take a shot and when not to… You have to navigate terrain. You have to choose arrows or shotgun gauges or rifle calibers. Along the way, you learn what works and what doesn’t. Sometimes you make mistakes, but you learn to keep going.

Self-Discipline

What about self-discipline? When you’re hunting, this is a lesson learned. You are in charge of your bow or gun. You choose when to shoot it and when to hold back. You learn to control excitement and deal with fatigue. And you also learn to make ethical decisions regarding animals.

Preparation

Finally, there’s a good lesson involved with small game hunting and that’s “being informed” is a good thing to be. One has to study beforehand and know something about the animals they’re hunting. This involves learning new information, applying what you’ve learned for success, and avoiding errors when possible. An informed hunter does better than an uninformed one, which is a lesson that’s true for life in general– information is power and information is helpful.
